When if comes to the history of identity theft it is well known that online activity is something you need to be careful of. In the very early days of identity theft the thief would generally need to kill their victim in order to take over their identity. From that perspective, you could say that things have gotten better!
Later on, killing the victim became unnecessary as the electronic age meant that all the crook needed was some very basic information that could be obtained from the victims trash can. They could obtain bank statements, credit card information and pretty much everything they needed to take on your identity. This was a way to get the same kind of information without the need to rummage around in a trash bin.

Criminals would call people telling them they won a prize or were from a charitable organization calling about a donation. When they first started it was easy to convince people to give out personal information for verification purposes and then use it to open credit card accounts, buy houses and other forms of illegal financial transactions.
Even more convenient methods of stealing identities arose when criminals discovered techniques to intercept website traffic. Stricter security controls helped, but the history of identity theft continued to advance as greed became rampant as crooks were able to see the rewards available in getting more sophisticated in their techniques.
Background checks are rarely done on people that want to setup and host a website, and many “phishing” emails are sent ot to people enticing them to these websites with stories of their bank account being hacked and so on. Even with all the history of identity theft available to people, many still fall for phishing scams and give out their personal information without realizing that it will be used to access their accounts for malicious purposes.
