Think New York is expensive? Here are 7 free things to do. The big city offers so many things to do that can entertain even the grumpiest among us. One of the best ways to experience New York for free is to visit some of the physical landmarks that are affiliated with this international city.

Famous architects have had their opportunities to express themselves in New York City and we can visit their works for free. Find an inexpensive hotel roomand set your sights on some of these places that are free to visit and worthy of your tourist time when making your city trip to New York.

There are buildings that deserve your scrutiny and admiration and you can visit them for free.

1. Fortunately, the Trump Tower located in the Financial District of New York does not resemble Donald Trump. In fact, it was built before he was born. However, his organization purchased this crown jewel in the mid 1990s and it has been a tourist eye catcher ever since. It may be possible to spot him entering his own building located on Wall Street and Pine.

2. We cannot make up a list of structures in New York without including the Statue of Liberty. It is worth your time to visit this historical landmark and our most famous symbol of freedom. Given to the U.S. as a gift from France, the Statue of Liberty is more awesome to visit in person than anything you may have imagined in photos. The crown had previously been unavailable to visitors but it is now open. The view from the top is out of this world.

3. Since early 1930s, the Empire State Building has served as a noteworthy landmark in New York. It is located on 5th Avenue in Midtown South and at one time was cited as the tallest building in the world.

4. For art lovers, New York speaks to you. The Guggenheim Museum, designed by world famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright is unique and interesting enough to make our list of neat (and free) things to see in New York. We are not thrilled with the condition of the interior but the unique design is worth a look.

5. If you want to view really good art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue in Manhattan is the place for you. In addition to splendid artwork from decades back, the Museum has one of the best gift shops around.

6. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is on Amsterdam Avenue and West 110th Street in Manhattan and was under construction for many years. Now open, it purportedly is the largest church in the U.S. Its stunning architecture combines Romanesque and Byzantine design. It looks divinely inspired, especially inside.

7. As part of the United Nations Plaza on East 42nd Street, the Secretariat Building is the location of the UN headquarters. If you visit this building, you will technically no longer be standing on New York or U.S. property but in international territory. Le Corbusier, world famous architect designed this skyscraper.

There is so much more to see when planning your city trip to New York but these recommendations will give you a lot of satisfaction and insight about our beloved U.S. city.
