When going away camping, there are a lot of things to think about such as planning what gears and commodities to bring along.  The standard camping gears campers bring along are tents, sleeping bags, cookware and cutleries, and other small but equally important equipment such as bug repellants, flashlights, and mobile phones for emergencies.

These things may be thought as major camping supplies but as far as wilderness is concerned, campers need to be alert about the possible dangers.  Woodpeckers, squirrels and deers are not the kind of animals campers are likely to worry about but bigger and more dangerous creatures such as bears can be quite shocking.

Although bear attacks are rare, it wouldn’t hurt to take precautions particularly in a place such as the wilderness.

Bear encounters occur because of a number of reasons.  The most common is the attraction of bears to the food campers cook or throw away.  When bears think they are threatened, they regularly attack and the most dangerous of all are mother bears whose cubs are close or wild bears who are used to being around people.    Bears seeing people as food could also come about especially if those bears are in their young adult stage and have not seen people before.

Before you set up your tent in your chosen campsite, signs of bear activities may be nearby like bear paw-prints or animal carcasses which are signs of a wild animal just having its dinner.  There is a possibility that the carcass might draw other scavenging animals or the animal who killed and fed on that carcass itself.

If you spot an area with plenty of with bushes of berries, you may also want to get as far from that location seeing as bears are also avid feeders of berries.  Bears also often linger close to water, dark and thick woods, and rock faces.

Once you settled on an ideal spot for a campsite, make sure you properly store your food in a bear-proof container or, if possible, you can also hoist your food high up on a tree where bears can’t get to it.  When cooking your food, have a good distance between your tents and from where you’re cooking and you may also want to change clothes later on to minimize the possibility of bears being attracted to the cooking smell that might have stick to your clothes.

Eating your food inside your tent could also invite a bear encounter.  If you do run into a bear because it was attracted by your food, you can attempt to make it go away by making noises or shining your flashlight in its eyes.  If the bear is not repelled by these approaches let it rummage on your food or try to climb up a tree if you can.  Staying unhurt is your top priority.

It is also better to camp with others than just by yourself.  The more you are in a group, the less risk of bear encounter could occur.  If you brought your kids in your camping activity, always keep an eye on them and never let them wander by themselves.

An additional way to have security against bears is by bringing a bear deterrent spray.  You can get bear sprays on nearly all camping equipment stores.

If a bear visit your campsite and you don’t have a bear spray, climb a tree if you can or if you have bonfire, pick up a torch to discourage the bear to come near you but don’t make any aggressive movements unless the bear is really coming after you.  You should also stay put and not run away because doing so will only make the bear chase you and you don’t have a chance of outrunning it.  Your best option is to stand your ground.

If worse comes to worse and a bear is already trying to maul you down, curl up in a fetal position and protect your neck and face with your arms and hands.  If you have an opportunity to hurt its eyes, go for it.

A safe camping experience will always require a camper to always be ready for anything.
