One of the most important things you can do is always make sure you sign credit cards as soon as you receive them, and don’t even consider giving out your number to anyone but reputable merchants.

Even if you trust someone completely and want to lend them your credit card, you don’t know for sure that they will be able to take care of and protect your card with the same veracity as you would yourself.

Be sure to cancel any credit cards that you aren’t using and don’t need.  Cut the cards up or shred them before throwing them in the trash. Those that commit identity theft tend to go through dumpsters and  in order to obtain the personal information that they need to commit their crime.

Another great way to prevent identity theft is to never leave receipts at bank teller machines,  or at an automated gas station where you can slide your card in before filling up, and where you receipt spits out at the end. Other ways to prevent identity theft is to avoid keeping a written log of your important passwords, like your bank PIN number. These too often fall into the hands of the identity theft criminals.
